A new 3D Timelaps feature has been introduced by Google Earth that allows users to see how many changes have occurred in different places on Earth from 1984 to 2020.
With the help of this time-lapse feature, users will now be able to see the devastating effects of climate change and how different countries and cities have changed in different years. Rebecca Moore, director of Google Earth and Outreach, said in a blog post, “In the biggest update to Google Earth since 2017, you can now see our planet in a whole new dimension.”
With timelaps in Google Earth, 24 million satellite images from the past 37 years have been compiled into an interactive 4D experience. Moore said that now any planet can see around four decades of change and can witness it. He explained, “As soon as you start seeing things through Google Earth, it gets animated from the landscape in four decades. Now billions of people from all over the world can experience it from their web browser or even from their phones.
To use the time-lapse feature on Google Earth, users can visit g.co/Timelapse or open Google Earth and click on the wheel of the ship to find timelaps in the storytelling platform, Voyager, to watch interactive guided tours can do.
The company stated, “We have uploaded over 800 timelapse videos in both 2D and 3D for public use at g.co/TimelapseVideos.” It also stated that “users can use any video they choose as Ready to Use MP4 video or watch the video on YouTube.”
Until now 2D timelapse videos were available via Google Earth. Last year, the National Bureau of Economic Research noted that climate change could raise temperatures to the point that by 2100, 85 out of 100,000 people could die each year worldwide. Google has noted that it will update it every year for the next decade. This tool of Google will work from governments and researchers to publishers and teachers.
