Facebook has changed its name to Meta.
Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that Facebook as a corporate name will now be called Meta. So, when CEO Mark Zuckerberg did the rebranding during the Facebook Connect 2021 event late Thursday. However, this does not mean that Facebook will become a social media meta as there are many viral posts on social media.
But, it seems the rebranding hasn’t gone very well as Facebook has missed the handle @meta on Instagram. Actually a motorbike magazine had already taken it. Interestingly, Facebook found the handle @meta on Twitter but did not find it on its own platform, Instagram.
This username was found in place of Meta on Instagram
As with Google, Facebook now owns the domain name meta.com. However, on Instagram, the company has handled @wearameta instead of @meta. Regarding the Meta name, Teddy Schleifer, a reporter working around Silicon Valley, explains that the Chan Zuckerberg Science Initiative owns the Meta brand, a not-for-profit organization that Zuckerberg acquired in 2017. In addition, Schliefer points out that the Chan Zuckerberg Science Initiative recently transferred brand assets from Meta to Facebook.
Meta, the new parent company name for Facebook, isn’t just a rebrand effort or PR practice for the social media giant, amid many controversies. Some are also pointing to the way things work in many countries including India. But, the company describes it as “the next chapter for the company”.
Apart from Facebook, these companies have also done rebranding
From memes to WhatsApp forwards, meta has been in the news everywhere, but the fact is that Facebook isn’t the first to announce a rebrand. In 2015, Google renamed itself Alphabet and became a subsidiary of the parent company. This allowed Google to expand into different categories, not just to become a search engine giant. On a similar note, Snapchat rebranded itself to Snap Inc. in 2016.
Facebook’s rebranding is also part of Zuckerberg’s larger plans for the Metaverse and the company gave a glimpse of it during the Connect event, an AR and VR focused program.
