According to a recent survey, about 74 percent of the people said that despite being in the ‘Do Not Disturb’ list of regulatory body TRAI, they are getting unwanted commercial SMS. This information was given in a report released on Sunday by the online platform ‘LocalCircles’. According to this survey, ’74 percent of the people said that they are getting unwanted SMS despite being in the ‘Do Not Disturb’ list of the regulatory body TRAI.
At the same time, 26 percent people said that about 25 percent of unwanted SMS are sent by mobile service providers. Apart from this, it also includes spam SMS offers for banking, insurance, real estate, local services and making money. The ‘Do Not Disturb’ list is meant to protect users from annoying calls or messages.
35,000 people were involved in this survey
In this survey, 35,000 people from 324 districts of the country were included. It was found in this that 73 percent of the people have been getting four or more unwanted SMS every day. The survey followed the rules recently introduced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in which the department has said to impose fines on harassing callers.
The Department of Telecom has set up two specialized units to coordinate with law enforcement agencies, financial institutions and other government agencies in cases of fraud using telecom resources or services. These include Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) and Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAFCOP).
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) manages the rules related to disturbing calls. In this, a provision has been made for a fine of Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 per violation on the harassing caller.
DoT changed slabs for violators
The DoT has proposed to make the norms more stringent by reducing the slab to Rs 1,000 per violation to levy fines for 0-10 violations, to Rs 5,000 for every 10-50 violations, and for more than 50 violations. 10,000 per violation has been charged for this.
At present, the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR) 2018 includes rules for 0-100, 100-1,000 and more than 1,000 violations. DoT has said to block the IMEI of the device sending the fake SMS. Along with this, it has also been said to block the IDs of those telemarketing companies which violate the rules.
