Apart from Telegram, other apps benefited from this.
Whenever there is a loss of WhatsApp and Facebook, Signal and Telegram have got the direct benefit. Telegram benefited the most even when both the platforms were down where it added many users.
The disadvantage of WhatsApp has always been a profitable deal for Telegram. WhatsApp recently suffered a massive outage globally, lasting over six hours, but over the entire period of WhatsApp down, Telegram added 70 million users. Along with WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram were also closed for about six hours on Monday evening.
The social media giant has blamed a faulty configuration change for the outage affecting over 3.5 billion users worldwide. While the Facebook outage may have hurt the company, its rivals Telegram and Signal certainly had a profitable day.
Telegram recently achieved over 1 billion downloads and has 500 million active users. Not only Telegram but Signal WhatsApp and Facebook benefited from being down. When WhatsApp’s new privacy policy was under constant scrutiny, the messaging app saw a surge in users. Telegram and Signal were considered to be safer alternatives as compared to WhatsApp.
With services suspended for hours, web users began to realize that this time it was something serious that affected Facebook. Many speculated that the cyberattack knocked Facebook offline, or that perhaps a Facebook employee had hacked the company’s servers. However, those more familiar with the way the Internet worked correctly identified that the problem was with Facebook’s DNS servers and BGP (the local peering network that Facebook uses).
The most important thing about this problem was that it completely made the Facebook servers disappear from the platform and the Internet. It was so dangerous that even Facebook could not detect it for a long time. All electronic doors and locks are automatically locked. Due to which Facebook employees had to enter their server room located in Santa Clara.
