Regarding Tiktok, it has been seen that today’s children are using this app fiercely. In such a situation, now the Chinese government has found a new way to control it.
Tiktok has changed its rules
Douyin, the video app for ByteDance, the Chinese version of TikTok, has announced that it is limiting children’s time on the app to 40 minutes per day and banning overnight use. The Verge reported that teens under the age of 14 will be able to access Douyin between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., but won’t be able to use the app outside that window.
Users under the age of 14 will be required to enter youth mode which will be limited to 40 minutes of usage per day. The new controls apply to users who have entered their real name and age. The company has also requested the parents to fill in the actual details of their children. In addition, content available to users in Youth Mode will now include educational materials such as “interesting popular science uses, libraries and exhibition galleries”.
In June, China revised its “Minor Protection Law”, which requires Internet service providers, including social media apps, to “establish related functions such as time management, content restrictions and consumption limits for minors”.
According to rules recently published by China’s National Press and Publishing Administration, children and adolescents under the age of 18 in China will only be allowed up to three hours per week to play online video games.
People under the age of 18 are allowed to play video games for one hour a day between 8 pm and 9 pm on weekends and legal holidays. The agency has introduced the rules as a way to protect the physical and mental health of children.
Tiktok’s craze too much
Users of the short video making platform Tiktok now spend more time watching content every month than YouTube users. According to app analytics firm App Annie, TikTok overtook YouTube in the US for the first time in August last year and by June 2021 its users have watched more than 24 hours of content per month, compared to 22 hours and 40 minutes on YouTube.
As reported by The Verge, the gap is even greater in the UK as TikTok overtook YouTube in May last year. Users now watch around 26 hours of content in a month, compared to less than 16 hours on YouTube.
