According to a Reuters report, the CCI has launched an investigation into allegations of forcing app developers to use Apple’s proprietary systems. This proprietary system charges up to 30 percent commission for in-app purchases. Apple in its filing to the CCI has said that its market share in India is 0-5 percent, which is very low. Google occupies 90-100 percent of this market because most of the smartphones have Google’s Android operating system. Apple has said in the filing, “The company does not have dominance in the Indian market. Without dominance, there cannot be misuse. It has already been determined that Google is a big player in the Indian market.”
Apple and CCI have not commented on this. A spokesperson for Alphabet, which runs Google, declined to comment. The complaint was filed by a non-profit group called “Together We Fight Society”. It said that Apple dominates the market of unlicensed mobile operating systems with its iOS. However, Apple said in its filing that it should cover the entire smartphone market, including licensed systems such as Android. The company has also called this complaint a “proxy filing”. Apple says that the complaint appears to be made in conjunction with the parties with whom Apple has commercial and contractual disputes around the world or who have complained to other regulators.
The company has not provided any evidence to support its claim. CCI will review Apple’s response to these allegations. After that he can order further investigation or the case can be dismissed.
