In an interview to 91Mobiles, CTO Randeep Shekhon told that Airtel will launch its 5G services within 2-3 months after the completion of spectrum auction.
“It’s not a race. We think Airtel is ready to launch 5G service after spectrum auction,” he said. He indicated that the tariff of 5G plans in the country will be the same as that of 4G plans.
Airtel showcased its 5G capabilities by reviving the stadium experience of Kapil Dev’s 175 in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. It played 4K video for 50 users simultaneously. The network had an average speed of 200Mbps and a latency of 20 milliseconds.
The telecom operator also showcased Kapil Dev’s 5G powered hologram to represent its next generation network. It was running in non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) mode on Ericsson 5G Radio in the 3,500MHz band test spectrum.
In January last year, Airtel did a live demo of its 5G network in Hyderabad. After that in June, the company started it in Gurugram, in which it was offering speed up to 1Gbps in the testing phase. Airtel also tied up with Qualcomm last year to strengthen its 5G network rollout in the country.
Like Airtel, Jio also announced last year that it is testing its 5G network with speeds of up to 1Gbps. Along with Jio, Google, Intel and Qualcomm are also associated with it.
