Kolkata: Shreyas Iyer may be the third most expensive player in the IPL Mega Auction 2022 but he will have to perform all-rounder to make it into the Indian T20 team. Because according to captain Rohit Sharma, this is what the team needs in the middle order.
Wednesday was a mixed day for Shreyas. Kolkata Knight Riders made him the captain of their team in the IPL but in the evening he came to know that there was no place for him in the Indian team in the T20 match against West Indies. After the six-wicket win in the second match, Rohit said, “A player like Shreyas Iyer has to sit out. It is very difficult but the decision was taken according to the needs of the team. We need an all-rounder in the middle order.”

“It’s good to see this kind of competition in the team,” he said. The Indian captain said, “We have told Shreyas that the team needs an all-rounder before the World Cup. They are all smart and professional players and understand that the team is paramount. “The playing XI is selected keeping in mind several criteria. The opposing team, the conditions, the size of the field, etc. Sometimes it is very difficult for players to get out but we are giving a clear message. We have to put the team first.”
Rohit had also said before the match that he would not make the team based on the IPL equations. He did the same when Shreyas (12.25 cr), Shardul Thakur (10.75 cr) and Avesh Khan (10 cr) had to sit out. At the same time, Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 6 crore) and Mohammad Siraj (Rs 7 crore), retained by IPL teams, were also out. Deepak Hooda has been sold for six crore rupees and Kuldeep Yadav for two crore rupees i.e. the price of the reserve bench of the Indian team in the IPL was more than 50 crore rupees. (agency)
