The Patriots are making a wide receiver swap on their practice squad.
The Pats are signing undrafted rookie wide receiver T.J. Luther and releasing another UDFA rookie wideout, Thyrick Pitts, in a corresponding roster move, according to sources.
Luther, a Gardner-Webb product, was waived by the Jets on Tuesday. The 5-foot-11, 189-pound wide receiver took a Top-30 visit with the Patriots before the draft but wound up signing with the Jets in April. He was targeted six times but didn’t catch a pass during the preseason.
The Arcadia, Fla.-native caught 55 passes for 1,035 yards with seven touchdowns with the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2022. He wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine but ran a 4.50-second 40-yard dash with a 39-inch vertical leap, 10-feet, 7-inch broad jump, 4.40-second short shuttle and 7.39-second 3-cone drill with 14 bench press reps of 225 pounds at Charlotte’s pro day in March. He originally attende Woffard before transferring to Gardner-Webb.
The Patriots claimed Pitts off waivers from the Bears on Aug. 1. He was waived Tuesday and signed to the team’s practice squad Wednesday. The Delaware-product caught four passes on 10 targets for 42 yards in three preseason games.
The Patriots already have quarterback/wide receiver Malik Cunningham on their practice squad. They’re also signing 2020 first-round pick wide receiver Jalen Reagor.
JuJu Smith-Schuster, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and rookies Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte fill out the Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart on the 53-man roster. Wideout Tyquant Thornton was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder ailment Thursday. Parker has missed the Pats’ last two practices.
