Ahmedabad: A century partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant and another outstanding performance by the bowlers helped India beat West Indies by 96 runs in the third and final One Day International (ODI) here on Friday. They made a clean sweep 3-0 in the three-match series.
The top order of the Indian team, who came to bat first, faltered, but after recovering from COVID, playing the first match, Iyer (80 runs in 111 balls, nine fours) and Pant (56 runs in 54 balls, six fours, one six) hit right here. He took over the Indian innings by adding 110 runs for the fourth wicket. Deepak Chahar (38 off 38 balls, four fours, two sixes) and Washington Sundar (33 off 34 balls, two fours, one six) put on 53 runs for the seventh wicket as India lost all wickets in 50 overs to 265. Scored runs.
There was ‘seam movement’ and bounce in the pitch and the Indian bowlers also took advantage of this to bundle out West Indies for 169 runs in 37.1 overs. This is the first time that India have wiped out West Indies in an ODI series. India won the first match played at the same venue by six wickets and in the second match by 44 runs. Now a three-match T20 series will be played between these two teams in Kolkata from February 16.

West Indies’ top-order batsmen, however, had no answer for India’s mixed pace and spin attack. Siraj and Chahar shook the Caribbean team in the first five overs by dismissing Shai Hope (five), Brendan King (14) and Shamrah Brooks (nil). Darren Bravo (19) and captain Nicholas Pooran (34) did not allow wickets to fall for eight overs.
Krishna scored Bravo and Jason Holder (six) while spinner Kuldeep ensured India’s big win by dismissing Pooran and Fabian Allen (nil). Earlier, India had not started well. The score was reduced to 42 for three after skipper Rohit Sharma (13) and former captain Virat Kohli (nil) returned to the pavilion within three balls of the fourth over and Shikhar Dhawan (10) was dismissed early.
Joseph (2 for 54) shook the Indian top-order while leg-spinner Walsh (2 for 59) dismissed Iyer and Pant. All-rounder Holder (4 for 34) played a key role in finishing the lower order. Joseph created a ruckus in the Indian camp by dismissing ODI stalwarts Rohit and Kohli. When Rohit hit the ball on his wickets without using his footwork, Kohli caught it to wicketkeeper Shai Hope in an attempt to flick the ball down the leg side. Scored 16 runs for two wickets.
Dhawan, playing for the first time in this series, faced the 15th ball and opened the account by hitting Kemar Roach for a six but was caught in the slips on a short-pitch delivery off Odeon Smith’s off-stump. India went into this match with four changes and after three early wickets, Iyer was sent to bat at number four as KL Rahul was unable to play due to injury. Pant came down to number five and both of them batted strategically in the middle overs.
Both Iyer and Pant played the spinners with ease. Pant also hit a six on Fabian Allen. Iyer meanwhile completed his ninth while Pant completed his fifth ODI half-century. Both of them were caught by Walsh in the net of his leg spin. Pant, attempting to play a late cut from close to the off-stump, caught the wicketkeeper while Iyer tried to play a long shot at extra cover, caught at long-off. Meanwhile, Allen sent Suryakumar Yadav (six) to the pavilion.
Chahar has shown flair with his batting in the recent past and again he has contributed significantly. Chahar hit sixes on Allen and Walsh before becoming Holder’s first victim. On Walsh, he hit two consecutive fours and sixes. Sundar also hit Joseph for a six in the last over before being caught at extra cover off Holder. (agency)
