NASHVILLE — Two days into the Winter Meetings and the Red Sox buying cart continues to be empty. While Craig Breslow gained’t say who the membership is or isn’t excited about — and particularly wouldn’t touch upon any potential pursuit of Shohei Ohtani — he did emphasize that the membership has remained lively behind the scenes.
“Obviously there’s nothing consequential and material to report which means that while it may be moving it hasn’t broken yet,” Breslow stated. “We remain actively engaged and hope to push.”
One factor Breslow did make clear was the membership’s priorities so far as what order they hope to handle their wants. Unsurprisingly, Breslow stated beginning pitching is the membership’s No. 1 want and every part else can be a secondary concern till that’s been taken care of.
He stated so explicitly when requested in regards to the membership’s plans for including a second basemen.
“Those conversations are ongoing but I think we’ve largely signaled that the focus is on starting pitching right now and if we could sequence this perfectly we would address starting pitching and then move on to things like second base,” Breslow stated. “We’re not going to be able to do that perfectly but we also want to be mindful of the natural cadence and sequencing of the offseason. So pretty significantly focused on pitching now but not completely ignoring the opportunity to upgrade on the defensive side.”
As far as second basemen go, Breslow stated the Red Sox are engaged in conversations with each free brokers and potential commerce companions, but when he needed to wager it’s extra possible the membership will make a commerce.
