This is India’s third win in six matches, taking them to six points and moving them to third place in the points table behind Australia and South Africa. India will play its last league match against South Africa on 27 March. This is Bangladesh’s fourth loss in five matches, which has also left them out of the race for the semi-finals. It was not an easy target for Bangladesh on a pitch favored by spinners and the Indian bowlers ensured their team’s victory by faltering their top and middle order amid the possibility of rain.
Bangladesh’s score was 35 for five in the 18th over. It also included 19 runs from opener Murshida Khatoon for which she played 54 balls. After this, Salma Khatoon (32) and Lata Mandal (24) added 40 runs for the sixth wicket. Jhulan Goswami broke the partnership by getting Salma Khatoon caught by wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh while Pooja Vastrakar took her second wicket in the form of Lata Mandal. Sneh Rana also played a key role in fixing the lower order after dismissing captain Nigar Sultana (3) and Rumana Ahmed (2) in the middle order.
For Bangladesh, Ritu Moni (16) and No. 11 batsman Jahanara Alam (11 not out) reduced the margin of defeat by reaching double digits. Earlier in the Indian innings, Smriti Mandhana (30) and Shafali Verma (42) shared a 74-run partnership for the first wicket but both the players were dismissed within four balls. Skipper Mithali Raj (nil) also returned to the pavilion without opening an account as the score went from 74 for three to 74 for no loss.

Medium pacer Ritu Moni (3 for 37) dismissed Shafali and Mithali in successive deliveries while left-arm spinner Nahida Akhtar (2 for 42) dealt India the first blow by dismissing Mandhana. Shafali hit six fours and a six in her innings. Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur was also run out after scoring 14 runs. Bhatia took over the responsibility from here and scored 50 runs in 80 balls with the help of two fours. He shared a 54-run partnership with Richa Ghosh (26). Nahida broke this partnership by dismissing Richa.
Bhatia also got caught at short fine leg in an attempt to scoop the paddle after completing his half-century. He was adjudged the player of the match for his half-century. Pooja Vastrakar (30) and Sneh Rana (27) shared 48 runs in 38 balls to take India past 200 runs. India included Poonam Yadav in the playing XI in place of fast bowler Meghna Singh, considering the pitch helpful to the spinners. (agency)
