The Patriots are understandably not able to reopen a quarterback battle one month after Mac Jones decisively beat out Bailey Zappe for the beginning position in coaching camp the preseason.
Jones was so significantly better this summer time, Zappe not solely was relegated to backup duties, the second-year professional was reduce out of coaching camp. He re-signed to the follow squad at some point later and ultimately was introduced again onto the 53-man roster.
But the Patriots have gone 1-3 over the primary month of the season, and Jones was benched for Zappe late in Sunday’s 38-3 loss to the Cowboys. Head coach Bill Belichick mentioned after the sport that Jones was not benched for efficiency, nevertheless, and that he would stay the Patriots’ starter.
“I didn’t think there was any point in leaving him in the game,” Belichick mentioned.
Belichick was requested Monday morning if Zappe might obtain first-team reps in follow.
“I doubt anything would change significantly,” Belichick mentioned. “But, we’ll talk about that. I don’t know. We haven’t gotten to that point yet.”
Belichick did reward Zappe’s preparedness on Monday.
“Bailey works hard,” Belichick mentioned. “He’s in here early, stays late. He spends a lot of time looking at film, studying what we do, what our opponents do, and he prepares very well.”
Jones threw two interceptions and misplaced a fumble in Sunday’s loss. One of these interceptions and the fumble have been returned for touchdowns.
Belichick was requested Monday morning about Jones’ decision-making.
“Well, I mean, everything gets highlighted by one or two plays, one way or another,” Belichick mentioned. “In general, I think he makes pretty good decisions. He sees things well, but obviously, as a team, we can’t win turning the ball over three times in a game, two for touchdowns. We’ve got to do a better job of that. That’s everybody’s responsibility. The quarterback’s part of it, so is everybody else.”
