The Spanish Radio Academy proposed to celebrate Radio Day for the first time in 2010. After which in 2011 at the 36th session of the General Assembly of UNESCO, 13 February was declared as World Radio Day. The declaration of UNESCO as World Radio Day on 13 February was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 14 January 2013.
