The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed on Thursday that the southwest monsoon may depart by October 26. The withdrawal of southwest monsoon this year has been delayed.
The Northeast Monsoon is very likely to become active over South-East Peninsular India on the same day. The north-east monsoon brings rain mostly to parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon Return Line is passing through Kohima, Silchar, Krishnanagar, Baripada, Malkangiri, Nalgonda, Bagalkot and Vengurla.
According to the Meteorological Department, rest of Northeast India, remaining parts of West Bengal, some parts of central Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Odisha, some parts of Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Telangana, entire Goa, some parts of Karnataka and Central Conditions are becoming favorable for the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from some parts of Arabian Sea. After this the northeast monsoon will start.

The Meteorological Department said that with the departure of the southwest monsoon by October 26, the northeast monsoon rains will start in southeast India. North East Monsoon causes rain over Tamil Nadu, parts of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Puducherry.
According to IMD, this time the withdrawal of southwest monsoon started from 6 October. This is the second time since 1975 that the most delayed return. Earlier in 2019, the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon started on 9 October. Usually the Southwest Monsoon starts withdrawing from Northwest India from 17th September.
Chances of rain in Northeast and South India
IMD has said that the cyclonic circulation is persisting over Bihar and adjoining areas. In such a situation, light to moderate rain with heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 20 and 21. Apart from this, the coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, South Karnataka are likely to receive rain during October 20 to 24.
IMD has issued an orange alert for Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts of Kerala. Heavy rain is already in Kerala. State CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that between October 12 and 20, 42 people have died due to rain and landslides in the state while 6 people are missing.
