An area of low pressure over the southwest Indian Ocean is expected to intensify into a cyclone early next week and move towards Bangladesh and adjoining north Myanmar. The Meteorological Department said that it later intensified into a low pressure area before moving towards Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The weather system is forecast to intensify into a cyclonic storm on March 21 and move north-northwestwards by March 22.
When it turns into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Asani’, a name suggested by Sri Lanka. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a warning about Asani, saying that there is a possibility of torrential rains in some areas due to intensification of the cyclonic storm. Meanwhile, there is a possibility of severe heat wave conditions in Rajasthan, the IMD said. Apart from this, there is a possibility of heat wave in many other states including Jammu, Himachal and Gujarat.
The Met Office has advised fishermen not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman Coast on Thursday and Friday. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the Andaman Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands between Saturday and Tuesday. Strong winds are expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday.
IMD issued rain warning
On March 18, there is a possibility of thunderstorms at most places with heavy rain at isolated places over Nicobar Islands.
– On 19th March, Andaman and Nicobar Islands with very heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely to occur at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands with thundershowers at most places.
On March 20, heavy rain and thundershowers are very likely to occur at isolated places and at isolated places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
There is a possibility of scattered and heavy rain at isolated places over Andaman Islands on March 21.

Strong winds gusting to 40 to 50 kmph are very likely to prevail over Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea on March 17 and 18.

Strong wind speed reaching 55 to 65 kmph is very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal on March 20 and will gradually increase thereafter.
