Ukraine-Russia War: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked Attorney General KK Venugopal to help rescue some Indian students stranded in Ukraine near the Romanian border. A bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana (CJI NV Ramana), Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hima Kohli took note of a PIL filed by a lawyer, who had contended that a large number of people had gathered in the midst of freezing cold on the Romanian border. Students are stranded and the government is not operating flights from Romania.
The counsel told the bench that the flights were operating from Poland and Hungary and not Romania. A large number of students including girls are stranded there without any facilities. On this, the Supreme Court said that we all sympathize with him, but what can the court do in this.
According to Live Law, CJI NV Ramana said, “What can the Supreme Court do? Can I instruct the President of Russia to stop the war?” He further added, “I saw some videos on social media saying what the CJI is doing!” The lawyer said that the petition is seeking a direction to the Center to take steps to evacuate the students.
The lawyer said that most of the students are girls and they are suffering from cold. To this the CJI said, “We have full sympathy with him. But what can the court do.” He said that the government is taking steps to take care of the students.

The CJI further said, “What do you expect the court to do? The government is already doing it.” The lawyer said that about 30 girl students are stuck without food on the Ukrainian border for about 6 days. To this, the CJI said that he would ask the Attorney General of India to ascertain the status and list the matter.
The counsel for the petitioner claimed that the students were being prevented from going from Ukraine to Romania. To this, the bench asked the top law officer, the Attorney General, to consider helping the stranded students.
