Bullet too close to heart
After attacking the US President, the security forces quickly jumped towards Hinkley and caught him. He was taken towards a wall and handcuffed in both his hands. Reagan was seated in a limousine by a secret service agent and swiftly taken to the hospital. The President was shot in the left lung and it was very close to the heart. On reaching the hospital, the 70-year-old President, walking himself in an injured state, reached the hospital courtyard.
The President started working on the very next day of surgery
President Reagan was immediately taken for surgery. There was no fear of any kind on his face. After two hours of surgery, the President came to his senses and looked stable. The next day, the President resumed some of his executive duties and signed a law from his hospital bed. On April 11, he returned to the White House again. Reagan’s popularity increased after the assassination attempt and in late April the Congress welcomed him as a hero.
Attacker Hinkley found not guilty due to insanity
On the other hand, on 30 March 1981, 25-year-old John Hinckley was arrested and was charged with severe sections for attacking the President. Hinckley was arrested in Tennessee earlier in a weapons case. In June 1982, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. During the hearing, Hinckley’s lawyer argued, citing medical evidence, that his client suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He carried out the attack in 1976 after watching a film called Taxi Driver.
Hinkley sent to mental hospital
Hinkley’s lawyer said in court that his client had seen the film dozens of times. In it, the main character tries to kill a senator. After watching this film Hinkley was impressed with the main character. In this way, not Hinkley, but this film is the real reason for the attack on the President. The court ruled that Hinkley is not guilty because he is insane. After this decision, there was a lot of criticism in America. However, the court also ordered an order to send him to Mental Hospital.
