ADR report
Uttar Pradesh Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analyzed the affidavits of 584 candidates out of 586 contesting in the second phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election 2022, who are contesting from 55 constituencies.
From this ADR report, it has come to the fore that out of 584, 25% i.e. 147 candidates have criminal cases against them. 19% i.e. 113 candidates with serious criminal cases are in the fray.

Which party’s many tainted candidates
The name of the Samajwadi Party is at the top of this list. Of the 52 SP candidates, 35 (67%) are those who have criminal cases against them. Second, out of 54 Congress candidates, 23 (43%) have criminal cases against them. On the other hand, 20 out of 55 (36%) candidates of BSP, 18 out of 53 (34%) of BJP, 1 out of 3 (33%) of RLD and 7 out of 49 (14%) candidates of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He has given information about criminal cases against him.
Now if we talk about serious criminal cases, then in this also the name of SP comes first. SP has 25 out of 52 (48%), then Congress has 16 out of 54 (30%), BSP has 15 out of 55 (27%), BJP has 11 out of 53 (21%), RLD has 3 1 (33%) and 6 out of 49 (12%) APP candidates have reported serious criminal cases against themselves.
Out of these, 6 candidates have declared cases related to atrocities against women, while 1 candidate has declared cases related to murder (IPC-302). Apart from this, 18 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC-307) against themselves.
Political parties followed Supreme Court directives
According to the ADR report, the directions of the Supreme Court on the political parties in the selection of candidates for the second phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections have not had any effect, as they have reneged on their old promise of giving tickets to around 25 per cent candidates with criminal cases. practice is followed. All the major parties contesting in the second phase of Uttar Pradesh have given tickets to 14 per cent to 67 per cent candidates who have declared criminal cases against them.
The Supreme Court, in its directions dated February 13, 2020, had specifically directed political parties to choose candidates with criminal background and to explain the reasons for not giving tickets to candidates with clean image. As per these mandatory guidelines, the reason for such selection should be with reference to the merit, achievements and merit of the candidate concerned.
