UP Assembly Elections Result 2022: The results of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are out. The BJP has returned to power in Uttar Pradesh and there has been some increase in the seats of the Samajwadi Party, but Akhilesh Yadav will still remain the former Chief Minister. Many big leaders of parties like BJP, BSP, SP and Congress have to face defeat in the elections. Let us put on some such big faces…
Keshav Prasad Maurya (BJP)
BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Keshav Prasad Maurya is trailing over Samajwadi Party candidate Pallavi Patel from Sirathu assembly constituency. Maurya was trailing by over 6,000 votes. She is facing a tough challenge from Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) leader Ms Patel, who is contesting from Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.
Pallavi Patel is the sister of Union Minister Anupriya Patel, who is the Union Minister of State for Trade and Commerce and heads the Apna Dal (Sonelal), an ally of the BJP. For Maurya, who is a prominent OBC face for the BJP, winning from Sirathu seat in Kaushambi district is crucial to his political career. He contested the 2002, 2007 and 2012 assembly elections and is the sitting MLA from Sirathu Assembly Constituency.
Suresh Rana (BJP)
The sitting MLA and minister in charge of sugarcane development and sugar mills Suresh Rana lost the election to Ashraf Ali of RLD in Thana Bhawan. The constituency with a Jat, Gujjar and Muslim population supported the coalition’s candidate by a margin of over 13,000 votes. Rana had to face anti-incumbency sentiment while repeating the MLA’s term for the third time. He was also one of the accused in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.
Locals of the areas alleged that the ruling party did not pay the cane arrears as promised. Many held Rana responsible for the pending payments and exploitative actions of the local mills. Ashraf Ali came close to victory in 2012 after losing to Rana by just 265 votes.
Goa Election Result 2022: ‘Party cadre did not support me’, BJP’s ‘babush’ who defeated Utpal Parrikar is angry with the party
Despite opposition from Samajwadi Party supporters against not giving ticket to SP leader Sher Singh Rana, the alliance benefited from giving a seat to an RLD candidate.
Sangeet Som (BJP)
The seat saw a close contest in several rounds, eventually losing BJP MLA Sangeet Som to Atul Pradhan of SP in Sardhana constituency by over 15,000 votes. This was Sangeet’s third election after winning the seat for two consecutive terms. Som was also one of the accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots. Som was earlier the president of the student wing of the Samajwadi Party. This is a significant victory for the alliance, as the SP has never won an election on this seat.
Ajay Kumar Lallu (Congress)
Congress state president Ajay Kumar Lallu missed out on a hat-trick after he lost to BJP’s Asim Kumar in Tamkuhi Raj constituency. Lallu has been leading Congress campaigns in the state for many years, has faced several cases in connection with organized movements and is the most visible face for the party in the state.
Kunda: For the first time in 29 years, a candidate saved bail in front of Raja Bhaiya, Gulshan Yadav broke this record in Kunda
With the Congress reduced to two seats in the state, Lallu’s defeat will deal a major blow to the party’s political prospects. Local people rejected Lallu in favor of Bhumihar leader Asim.
Satish Chandra Dwivedi (BJP)
In Etawah of Siddharthnagar, Basic Education Minister Satish Dwivedi lost to veteran SP leader Mata Prasad Pandey by a margin of 4000 votes. Mata Prasad was elected MLA from this seat six times with his first electoral victory in 1985. Satish Chandra is the second cabinet minister to lose in the assembly elections. SP leader Pandey had finished third in the last election.
Swami Prasad Maurya (Samajwadi Party)
In Kushinagar’s Fazilanagar, Swami Maurya lost to BJP’s Surendra Kushwaha by over 30,000 votes. Swamy built his career on the SP for two decades as a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and in the last five years in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a cabinet minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led government.
He was once a close confidante of BSP chief Mayawati, was made a minister thrice during the BSP regime and was also the leader of the opposition every time the BSP was out of power. He was also made the national general secretary of the BSP.
Maurya later joined the BJP just before the 2017 elections, claiming that he was impressed by the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “weaker sections” of the society.
