New Delhi : Krishnamachari Srikkanth is a former captain of the Indian cricket team and a former chairman of the selection committee. He was born on 21 December 1959 in Madras (India). He is also known as Kris Srikkanth. His father, C.R. Krishnamachari (CR Krishnamachari) and mother is Indira Krishnamachari. Srikanth is celebrating his 62nd birthday this time. He played a key role in India’s batting in the 1983 Cricket World Cup squad, especially as an opener and contributed 38 runs as the top scorer in the final against West Indies.
He represented the Indian national cricket team and Tamil Nadu in Indian domestic cricket. Along with this, he is also the commentator of Star Sports Tamil. Srikanth is also an Electrical Engineer, he graduated from Engineering College, Guindy in Chennai. Srikanth’s wife is Vidya. They have two sons, one of whom Anirudh plays for the Tamil Nadu cricket team and has played for both Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. Srikanth played domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu and South Zone. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against England in Ahmedabad in 1981, followed by Test debut at the age of 21 against England in Bombay two days later. He opened the innings with Sunil Gavaskar. Srikanth was an integral member of the Indian team when it won the 1983 Prudential World Cup and the 1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket. In the 1983 World Cup final against West Indies, Srikanth top-scored in the final.
He was made the captain of the Indian team in 1989. In the same year, Sachin Tendulkar made his debut under the captaincy of Srikanth. He remained the captain of the team for India’s tour of Pakistan in 1990 and was able to draw all Tests of the series. He retired from international cricket in 1993. He was the first Indian player to score a half-century and take 5 wickets in an ODI. He achieved this feat against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam in 1988.
After retirement, Srikanth served as the coach of the India ‘A’ team. Since then he has been a broadcaster and commentator for various sports and news channels. On 18 February 2008, Srikanth was named the ambassador for the Chennai Super Kings franchise of the Indian Premier League. On 27 September 2008, he was appointed the chief selector of the Indian cricket team. His term ended in 2012. On 20 December 2012, Srikanth was named the ambassador for the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise of the Indian Premier League. He is also a commentator for the TV network Star Sports Tamil. He has also been included in the panel of All India Sports Council (AICS) as a member in January 2020.
In June 2013, Srikanth participated in the sixth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.
