Mumbai: At least six people were killed and 23 others injured when a massive fire broke out on the 19th floor of a multi-storey residential building in central Mumbai’s Tardeo area on Saturday morning. . After the matter, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has said that the entire incident should be investigated. Ajit Pawar has said that the incident of fire in Kamala Building in Tardeo area of Mumbai will be investigated. Our Guardian Minister Aditya Thackeray and Mumbai City Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh will oversee the investigation.
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said the fire broke out around 7 am in the building ‘Sachinam Heights’ located opposite Bhatia Hospital in Gowalia Tank. Many people living in it were sleeping at that time. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis alleged that nearby hospitals refused to admit the injured, leading to “more deaths”. He demanded action against those responsible for the incident. Giving information about the incident, a civic official said, “It is a 20-storey building. The fire started on its 19th floor. On getting information, fire brigade personnel and police reached the spot. Several people were injured in the incident, out of which 29 were taken to various nearby hospitals in injured condition. While many others complained of health problems like suffocation.

Five of the seven injured, who were taken to the BMC-run Nair Hospital, died while another one died at Kasturba Hospital, the official said. The official said that 17 injured were admitted to Bhatia Hospital, out of which five were discharged after treatment. Of the remaining 12, three are in critical condition and are being treated. One person was admitted to Masina Hospital and his condition is stable, the official said. The other has been admitted to Wockhardt Hospital. Another patient was admitted to HN Reliance Hospital, who has been discharged.

He said that on getting information, 13 fire tenders and seven water tankers reached the spot to douse the fire. This fire has been described as the third level (horrific) fire. The fire was brought under control at 12.20 pm. Another official said, “Soon after the fire broke out on the 19th floor, residents along with their family members started running outside. There are at least six flats on each floor. The fire engulfed the floor and some residents were trapped there.” He said that according to some residents, the power supply to the building was cut off after the fire broke out. Several residents of the building were sleeping when the fire broke out. He said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis said in a post on social media, “I am shocked and distressed to learn that nearby hospitals refused to admit the injured, resulting in more deaths. If this is true, then the BMC and the state administration should fix the accountability for these deaths and take action against those who are responsible for it.”
