The telecom department has taken this step after an amendment made in the Unified License in December, which made it mandatory to keep internet details apart from call data records for two years. Earlier this provision was applicable only for one year. Unified license holder companies include Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Jio, BSNL. They provide all types of telecom services to their customers except satellite phone services.

According to this circular issued by the department on Friday, license holder companies will have to store call data records, IP records and all commercial records for at least two years so that the government can verify them for security reasons. Companies can destroy this figure after the completion of the two-year period, unless a specific direction has been given. Changes to the provisions relating to the Unified License shall also apply to Tata Communications, Cisco Webex, AT&T Global Networks that have purchased these licenses.
