The Tamil Nadu government has decided to reopen the Sterlite copper smelter plant at Thoothukudi for a period of four months to produce medical oxygen. This decision was taken after the all-party meeting held at the Secretariat in Chennai under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Palaniswami. AIADMK, DMK, BJP, PMK, DMDK, Communist parties, Director General of Police, Health Secretary and other senior officials were part of the meeting.
All parties agreed
Because only recognized parties were invited, other major parties like VCK, actor Kamal Haasan’s MNM and NTK were not involved. The Chief Minister informed that a unanimous decision was taken in the meeting. He said that all the parties have given their consent to reopen the plant that manufactures oxygen.
He further said that these proposals have been passed in the meeting: The copper smelter plant at Thoothukudi will be allowed to reopen for a period of four months to manufacture oxygen. Under any circumstances, Vedanta will not be allowed to open or operate another plant. Depending on the need for oxygen, the duration can be extended. The supply of electricity to the oxygen plant will be cut after the stated period.

The unit will get security
Oxygen will be sent to other states only after Tamil Nadu needs are met. Technicians of the copper smelter unit will be allowed to enter the area alone with the correct admission cards. The government will provide adequate security to the unit. A committee will be formed under the leadership of the District Collector, whose job will be to supervise the manufacturing works. District SP, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials, district environmental officers, local representatives, environmental activists, three people of the anti-sterile organization will be part of the committee.
