Pegasus Project: The country’s highest court has ordered an independent investigation into the Pegasus espionage case on 27 October. The Supreme Court has constituted a committee of experts in this matter which will investigate under the supervision of the top court. In this case, it will be investigated whether the right to privacy has been violated or not. The three-member committee will be headed by former Supreme Court Justice RV Raveendran. Apart from this, Alok Joshi and Sandeep Oberoi will also be in the committee. The court has asked a three-member committee of experts to investigate the matter thoroughly and submit its report. It will be heard after eight weeks. The court also said that the central government has categorically denied the allegations of illegal surveillance but this is not enough.

Court ordered on the petition of the victims
A bench of Chief Justice NV Raman and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli said that initially when the petition was filed seeking an independent inquiry into the matter, the court was not satisfied with the petition filed on the basis of newspaper reports. However, after this petition was filed by some people who were directly victims of this case, then the Supreme Court has ordered an independent investigation by forming an expert committee on this. According to the court, technology is important, but it is also necessary to protect the right to privacy of not only journalists but also of all citizens.

The court had reserved its decision in this case only on September 13 last month. The court had said that it only wanted to know whether the Center illegally used Pegasus spyware for allegedly spying on citizens. The Supreme Court has given this decision on the petition of senior journalists like N Ram and Shashi Kumar and Editors Guild of India. Let us tell you that in July, a global investigative project revealed that Pegasus spyware of Israeli company NSO Group targeted more than 300 mobile phone numbers in India i.e. they were spied. In this, Union Ministers, Leaders of Opposition, persons holding constitutional posts and big journalists of many media institutions including Indian Express were also targeted.
