After being nominated for the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award on the eve of Republic Day, Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Thursday congratulated President Ram Nath Kovind and Expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Thanking President Kovind, PM Modi and the Padma Awards panel, Sundar Pichai said in a statement that I am deeply grateful to the Padma Awards Committee, the President and the Prime Minister as well as the people of India for this honour.
He further added that it becomes even more meaningful to be a part of this esteemed group of people who have had a profound impact on their respective regions and communities. Pichai said that I am humbled to receive this award with him.
Earlier, Pichai had “liked” some tweets congratulating him. These include tweets from the Indian Embassy in the US and the post of Ambassador. “Congratulations @madhurjaffrey @satyanadella and @sundarpichai for being awarded the Padma Bhushan for their distinguished contribution to the Culinary & Technology sectors,” the Embassy of India tweeted on January 25.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai have been honored with the country’s third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is the second Indian-origin CEO to be nominated for the Padma Bhushan this year.
Both are designated in the “Trade and Industry” category. Microsoft President and CEO Satya Nadella joined the company in 1992. Prior to being named CEO in February 2014, he held leadership roles in both the enterprise and consumer businesses at the company.
Originally from Hyderabad, Nadella earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mangalore University. At the same time, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary, Google, was born in Chennai and earned a degree in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He joined Google in 2004.
In August 2015, he was made the CEO of Google. Apart from this, Padma Shri recipients from business and industry include Prahlad Rai Aggarwal, Chairman, Roopa & Company Limited, and Jagjit Singh Dardi, Chandigarh-based.
Padma awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. Awards are given for contributions in various disciplines or fields of activity, such as arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the President approved the conferment of 128 Padma Awards this year including two double cases. In the double case, the award counts as one. The list includes four Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. 34 of the awardees are women.
