Renowned social activist and Padma Shri awardee Sindhutai Sapkal passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75 due to a heart attack at a hospital in Pune. She was known as the Mother of Orphans.
The President of the country, PM Narendra Modi and Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray have condoled the death of Sindhutai Sapkal. Sindhutai Sapkal was awarded the Padma Shri award last year for serving orphans for several decades.
Sindhutai is called ‘Mother Teresa’ of Maharashtra. He spent his whole life in the service of orphan children. He adopted and looked after 1400 orphan children. For this noble work, he was also honored with many other awards including Padma Shri. The country’s President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted that Sapkal’s life was dedicated to courage, dedication and service.
Paying tribute to Sapkal, PM Modi tweeted that Dr. Sindhutai Sapkal will always be remembered for his excellent service to the society. Many children have been able to lead a better life because of his efforts. He said, “Sindhutai Sapkal did a lot of work even among the marginalized communities. I am saddened by his death. Growing up in poverty, Sapkal had to face many difficulties in childhood. He established institutions for orphans. Born on November 14, 1948 in Wardha district of Maharashtra, Sapkal was forced to drop out of school after passing the fourth standard. At the very young age of 12, she was married to a 32-year-old man. After giving birth to three children, her husband left her even when she was pregnant. Her own mother and the village she grew up in refused to help, forcing her to beg to raise her daughters.

Marathi biopic to premiere at London Film Festival
In 2010, a Marathi biopic on her, “Mee Sindhutai Sapkal”, was released. It was selected for world premiere at the 54th London Film Festival. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has condoled his death. He said that Sakkal, who took care of thousands of children, was a real Goddess in the form of a mother.
