Russia Ukraine War: Poland is ready to supply MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, but only within the framework of NATO, an adviser to the Polish President said on Wednesday. Earlier, the US rejected Poland’s offer to send its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine through an American airbase in Germany.
According to Reuters, Jacob Kumoch told Pulik broadcaster TVP Info: “The US does not want these planes to come to Ukraine from US bases.” He added, “Poland is ready to act, but only within the framework of the alliance, within the framework of NATO.”
Even though the US has demanded to accelerate the supply of arms to Ukraine. The Pentagon said, “…but the prospect of fighter jets flying into a war zone from a NATO region “could cause serious concern for the entire NATO alliance.”
‘Poland’s decision astonishing for us’
NATO has said it does not want a direct conflict with Russia, a fellow nuclear-armed power, and President Joe Biden has ruled out sending US troops to Ukraine to fight, with what the Pentagon has said is ground troops and applicable to air missions.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said of Poland’s proposal, “It is not clear to us whether it has any sound reasoning.” The No. 3 diplomat for the US State Department said the Polish proposal surprised the United States.
Ukraine Russia War: 20,000 foreign nationals took up arms in the fight against Russia, joined the army of Ukraine
According to Reuters, the State Department’s Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing: “To my knowledge, it was not previously discussed with us that they planned to deliver these aircraft to us, So that’s why I think it’s a shocking decision by Poland.”
US lawmakers putting pressure on President Biden
US lawmakers are eager to accelerate military aid to Ukraine and are pushing the Biden administration to facilitate aircraft transfers, but Poland’s announcement may reflect its own sensitivity.
Poland is backing Ukraine with weapons, but has said it will not send the jet as it is not directly involved in the ongoing fighting between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine is also not an ally of NATO.
The Polish plan proposed that the Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets be delivered to an American base in Ramstein, Germany, and then deployed to Ukraine.
