In the financial year 2021-22 in the state, the sale of liquor has registered a growth of 20 percent in terms of earning, making a record.
According to the data of the Excise Department, in the year 2021-22, the Excise Department has deposited Rs 36208.44 crore in the exchequer as excise duty, earning a record. At the same time, in the financial year 2020-21, a total revenue of Rs 30061.44 crore was received from the sale of liquor in the state. In this way, in the last one year itself, more than Rs.6147 crore has been earned from the sale of liquor.

According to the Excise Department, in the last financial year also, the maximum sale of liquor has happened in January and February after the announcement of elections. The share of excise revenue in the exchequer in the month of January alone stood at Rs 3471.41 crore. In February this year, there was a significant increase in the sale of country, English liquor and beer. In the month of February, there was an increase of 13 percent in the sale of country liquor, 18 percent in English and 58.6 percent in the sale of beer. In January and February 2022, the excise department has achieved about 114.9 percent more revenue than the target.
2076 new liquor shops were given license in the state
After the relaxation of COVID restrictions, the opening time of liquor shops was extended by one hour in the months of January-February, Excise Department officials say that in the last five years, permission has been given to open new liquor shops in the state. . In the first term of the Yogi government, since 2017-18, 2076 new liquor shops have been given license in the state. Although before this, 2566 new licenses were given during the five years of Mayawati’s government and 3621 new liquor shops during the tenure of Akhilesh Yadav government.
No reduction in the target of annual revenue of excise revenue
It is worth noting that during the tenure of the Yogi government in the last five years, there has been an increase of about 258% in the income from excise revenue. In the first wave of COVID, even after the closure of liquor shops for one and a half months, there was no shortfall in the target of annual revenue of excise revenue.
