Racism With Indian World War Martyrs: During the British Raj, about 50 thousand Indians who were martyred in the First World War have been treated racist. They were not respected like other martyrs. This information has been given in the Commonwealth report on Thursday. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), which recalled 1.7 million soldiers and women who lost their lives during the two world wars, formed a special committee in late 2019. Whose job is to investigate the people who were martyred during and after the first world war.
Now this commission has found that the martyrs of which country were discriminated against. It has been said in the report that there were around 45 thousand to 54 thousand deaths. Those consisting mainly of Indian, East African, West African, Egyptian and Somali soldiers are not remembered equally like other martyrs (Commonwealth Report on Indian Soliders). It has been told that about 350,000 people have not been remembered either by their names or at all. After all these things were revealed, Britain’s Defense Minister Ben Wallace has made a formal apology on behalf of the government in Parliament.
‘Partiality plays an important role’
He has said in front of Members of Parliament, ‘There is no doubt that partisanship has been important in some decisions of the commission. On behalf of both the Common War Graves Commission and the Government, I want to apologize today and this time and express my deep regret that it has taken so much time to rectify the situation. We cannot change the past, but we can amend and take any action. At the same time, the director general of the CWGC report said, “We apologize for whatever happened and will work on correcting the wrongs done in the past.” He said that the events that took place a century ago were still happening and are still wrong.
Indian soldiers fought in world war
In the First World War (1914–18), India was under the British Raj. At that time, Bangladesh and Pakistan were also part of India. A large number of soldiers of these countries went to fight in the First World War. A member of the committee said that the investigation has revealed surprising things (Indians in World War). Nearly 50 thousand Indian soldiers were not remembered by their names in Mesopotamia, Palestine and Egypt. Earlier, the Indian military general had advised the CWGC, which was then called the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC). He said that the names recorded on the tombs of Hindu and Muslim soldiers have not been given any importance. They can be remembered in memorial tablets.
