At least 40 acres of parking space is being constructed in Khatkar Kalan for the oath-taking ceremony of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab. Most of the fields have wheat crop, which is still green and the work of clearing the fields has started.
The swearing-in ceremony of Bhagwant Mann will be held on March 16 at Bhagat Singh’s native village in Khatkar Kalan. Mann wears a yellow turban as a mark of respect to the great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, whom he calls his ‘only idol, only guru and only hero’.
According to India Times, the debt-ridden state government has sanctioned Rs 2.61 crore for the swearing-in ceremony. Officials told news agency IANS that the wheat fields would be used for parking the vehicles of spectators attending the event, which lasted less than an hour.
Farmers will be given Rs 46,000 per acre as compensation
According to TOI report, Nawanshahr deputy commissioner Vishesh Sarangal did not pick up the phone but official sources revealed that farmers will be given compensation of around Rs 46,000 per acre. The report said that if the crowd increases, more crops may also be harvested for parking.
A Venu Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Punjab Government, said that four to five lakh people are expected to attend the event. “The venue will be spread over 100 acres – 50 acres for the main event and 50 acres for parking,” he said.

Mann, in an appeal, urged people to reach Khatkar Kalan for the swearing-in ceremony on March 16. Mann said in a video message, “I request my brothers to wear ‘Basanti’ (yellow) turban on that day and sisters to wear yellow shawls/stole. We will paint Khatkar Kalan in ‘Basanti Rang’ on that day.”
AAP had won a landslide victory in the election by winning 92 seats out of 117.
