New Delhi. The Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday claimed that it foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics and weapons from a drone near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.
A senior BSF official said a “sound of suspicious object flying from Pakistan side towards Indian territory” was heard in Panjgrain area of Gurdaspur sector at around 1 pm on Tuesday, following which soldiers fired at the drone. .
According to the incident, five bullets were fired at the drone by BSF women constables and male jawans on duty as soon as they saw the drone flying in the thick mist. BSF DIG Prabhakar Joshi said that the soldiers opened fire on sight of Pakistani drones flying over the border during dense fog.
He said that a search operation has been launched in the area by the BSF and Punjab Police personnel. But nothing suspicious has been found. He has appealed to the people of the border area to inform the concerned BSF post after seeing a drone or other suspicious object on the border. So that the untoward incident done by anti-national elements can be prevented.
“During searches in the areas of village Ghaggar and Singhoke, two yellow colored packets with suspected narcotic substances have been recovered so far,” the senior official said. He said that it is suspected that these packets were dropped by drones. A pistol was also wrapped in the packet and the consignment was found in a field at a distance of about 2.7 km from the fence, the official said. Efforts are on to ascertain whether the drone fell or disappeared, he said.
