The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday claimed that a top LeT commander of LeT in Pulwama district was cordoned off during an operation launched during the night at Drangbal Pampore. As per the new update, one terrorist was killed during the ensuing encounter while the other is also likely to be killed. Police have identified the trapped commander as Umar Mushtaq Khande, who is among the top 10 active commanders in Kashmir. Officials said Khande was involved in the killing of two police constables.
Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet quoting IG Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, “LeT Commander Umar Mushtaq Khande is implicated in the top 10 terrorists in Pampore encounter, who was involved in the killing of two police personnel in Baghat Srinagar and other terrorist crimes. “
In August, Umar was included in the top 10 terrorist targets by the police along with Salim Parre, Yusuf Kantro, Abbas Sheikh, Reyaz Shetergund, Farooq Nali, Zubair Wani and Ashraf Molvi, Saqib Manzoor and Vakil Shah.
This is the third operation since Friday afternoon, in which two terrorists involved in the killing of a civilian and a police sub-inspector in Srinagar were killed. Police have identified the slain terrorists as Shahid Bashir Sheikh and Tanzeel Ahmed, residents of Srinagar.
IG Kumar said that based on specific inputs about the presence of terrorists, two operations were conducted in Pulwama and Srinagar, which resulted in the killing of two Lashkar (TRF) terrorists and one civilian and one probationer in Srinagar recently. The police were involved in the murder of the sub-inspector.
He said that in the Pulwama encounter, a terrorist identified as Shahid Bashir Sheikh of Habba Kadal Srinagar was killed.
“As per police records, he had recently joined terror groups and was associated with banned terror outfit Lashkar (TRF). He was involved in the killing of a civilian Mohammad Shafi Dar (PDD employee) in Batamaloo Srinagar on October 2. He was also responsible for creating panic among the local people by threatening, intimidating and killing the civilians.”
Kumar said, in a second operation in Hamdaniya Colony Bemina, a terrorist identified as Tanzeel Ahmed of Habba Kadal Srinagar was gunned down.
He said that apart from these two specific murders, Shahid and Tanzil were also accomplices in the recent murders of a chemist and two teachers in the city. Incriminating material including arms (2 AK 47 rifles) and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site.
IGP Kashmir said that 11 terrorists have been killed in Kashmir since October 8, after civilians were killed in eight encounters in the city recently.
