Cariappa took over in 1949 from the last top British commander of the Indian Army. The Prime Minister said, “Indian Army personnel serve in remote areas and are at the forefront of helping civilians during humanitarian crisis, including national calamities. India is proud of the outstanding contribution of the Army during peacekeeping operations abroad.
