Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the central agencies to strengthen the zero tolerance policy towards corruption and said that there should be no safe haven for those committing crimes against the country. The Prime Minister directed officials of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure that those who cheated the country do not find shelter anywhere in the world.
Addressing a joint conference of CVC and CBI online at Kevadiya in Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi said that no matter how powerful a person is, strict action should be taken against those working against the national interest or its people. The Prime Minister’s statement comes at a time when the central government is taking legal action to bring back alleged economic offenders like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, who have taken refuge abroad.

The Prime Minister said that by working hard in the last six-seven years, his government has succeeded in instilling the belief among the people that it is possible to stop corruption and that they can get the benefits of government schemes without middlemen. He said that corruption, be it small or big… it always violates the rights of the common people. It hinders the progress of the country and affects our ability to work collectively. The Prime Minister said that the previous governments did not have the will to fight against corruption. He said the way the previous governments worked, they lacked both political and administrative will. Today, there is also the political will to attack corruption and continuous reforms are being carried out at the administrative level.
PM Modi said that after independence, the mindset of the governments was to keep everything under their control. Those governments exercised maximum control, due to which many types of wrong tendencies were born in the system. He said that maximum control… be it at home, in the family or in the country, it only causes maximum damage. So we started a campaign to ease this control, to make the life of the countrymen easier. We believe in minimum governance, maximum good governance.
The Prime Minister asked the officials to work on curbing corruption, instead of focusing only on finding out the modus operandi of crime after a fraud has taken place. He also asked officials of CBI and CVC to brainstorm to find ways to protect people from cyber frauds.
