In the last ten days, the price of petrol and diesel has increased 9 times and in these 9 times, oil has become more expensive by Rs 6 in the capital Delhi. The special thing is that out of the price at which we buy oil, up to 46 percent is taxed. The tax on oil has increased manifold under the Modi government. However, in addition to the central tax excise duty, the state also levies tax on it in the form of VAT, due to which the price of oil varies from state to state.
How much tax difference is on your pocket, it can be understood that in Delhi, Rs 43.40 tax has to be paid on petrol per liter of which Rs 27.90 is excise duty and Rs 15.50 is VAT (inclusive of VAT on dealer commission). On the other hand, if we talk about diesel, then per liter we have to pay excise duty of Rs 21.80 and VAT of Rs 12.68 (inclusive of VAT on dealer commission). How much excise duty increased in Modi government?
When the Modi government was formed for the first time at the Center in 2014, at that time the excise duty on petrol was Rs 9.20 per liter and that on diesel was Rs 3.46 per liter. In the last eight years, the duty on diesel has increased by 531 percent i.e. Rs 18.34 per liter and on petrol by 203 percent i.e. Rs 18.70. The price of oil has not increased continuously in eight years, but in the last two years it has increased sharply, as on 22 March 2020, petrol per liter in Delhi stood at Rs 69.59 and diesel at Rs 62.29, which has now increased today (March 31) respectively. : Rs 101.81 per liter and Rs 93.07 i.e. petrol has become costlier by Rs 32.22 per liter and diesel by Rs 30.78 in these two years.

What is the status of the states
Not only excise duty is a part of tax in the price of oil, but we also pay VAT. According to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell data, there is no state tax on petrol and diesel in Lakshadweep and 1-1 per cent state tax/VAT on petrol and diesel in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Telangana has the highest rate of VAT on petrol in the country at 35.20 percent and the highest rate of VAT on diesel is also here at 27 percent. In Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Bihar, about half the money is to be paid as tax on the purchase of petrol. At the same time, in three states Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, state taxes (VAT, cess etc.) are more than the central excise duty.
In Maharashtra, Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Amravati and Aurangabad have 26 per cent VAT and Rs 10.12 additional tax on petrol in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Amravati and Aurangabad and 24 per cent VAT and Rs 3 per liter on diesel. Apart from this, in the rest of Maharashtra, the VAT rate on petrol is 25 percent and on diesel 21 percent and the additional tax is the same. Talking about Uttar Pradesh, here the VAT rate on petrol is 19.36 per cent but it will have to pay more in Rs 14.85 per liter and tax on diesel is 17.08 per cent or Rs 10.41 per liter whichever is higher.
Major opposition party Congress launched ‘Dearness Free India’ campaign
The main opposition Congress has started a ‘Dearness Free India’ campaign on the impact of inflation on the common man and the party under the leadership of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi staged a sit-in at Vijay Chowk. Rahul Gandhi has tweeted targeting the Modi government by comparing it with the price of oil in neighboring countries and wrote, “Don’t ask questions with ‘fakir’, knowledge shared on camera, looted India with a bag full of jumlas.” When Yogguru Baba Ramdev was asked a question about this, he got angry and asked people to work harder. He said that the government is increasing the tax for the progress of the country. Let us tell you that in the previous UPA government, he had targeted expensive oil and he said that the price of oil would slip by Rs 40 in the Modi government.
