As part of the intelligence sharing arrangement between the two countries, Pakistani Army officers are being deployed at the formation headquarters of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China. According to reports in News18, according to inputs, liaison officers of Pakistan have been deployed at the headquarters of Western Theater Command and Southern Theater Command of China.
The PLA’s vital Western Theater Command oversees the country’s borders with India along the Xinjiang and Tibet Autonomous Regions. Last month, China appointed General Wang Haijiang as the new commander of the Western Theater Command.
News18.com quoted government sources as saying that despite the ongoing disengagement between Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a large number of Chinese troops are being deployed in the eastern Ladakh region from this command. The Southern Theater Command of the PLA oversees the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, Macau.
New intelligence also suggests that Pakistan Army’s colonel-rank officers have been posted to the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of State Security, which is responsible for combat planning, training and strategy for China’s armed forces. .
China’s state-run Global Times says that the Ministry of State Security under the State Council of China is responsible for counter-espionage and political security.
According to inputs, about 10 additional Pakistan Army officers, apart from defense attachments, are also stationed at the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing for procurement-related projects. According to security sources, the number of officers of the Pakistan Army in the PLA formation has increased manifold and thus speaks of closer coordination between the two countries.
According to a report by Dawn of Pakistan in 2016, Pakistan had set up a Special Security Division with 9,000 soldiers and 6,000 personnel of its paramilitary forces to protect the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and those involved in the work.
In 2019, the Pakistan Army said it would raise a divisional force of special troops to protect Chinese civilians and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, a project seen as an example of the deep friendship between Pakistan and China.
A senior government official told News18 that India is closely monitoring the developments.
