Navjot Singh Sidhu may continue as the President of the Punjab unit of Congress. An agreement has been reached between Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Sidhu. Sources told News18 that Sidhu has agreed to withdraw his resignation from the post of Punjab Congress president as the party has accepted his demands.
According to NDTV, the party is likely to constitute a three-member coordination committee with which the Punjab government is likely to deliberate on major decisions to be taken in future. The conclusion was reached after a two-hour-long meeting between state Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and him on Thursday evening to resolve the issues raised by Sidhu.
Amarinder Singh said, ‘Not going to BJP, but will not be in Congress either’, removed Congress from Twitter
Sources said the committee may include the chief minister, Sidhu and a representative of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). However, the picture is still not clear about how the differences arising over the appointment of DGP and Advocate General will be resolved. Sidhu had on Tuesday resigned from the post of Congress’s Punjab unit president over differences over the appointment of tainted officers and ministers.
Sidhu had publicly expressed his anger by releasing a video on Wednesday. Before his meeting with Channi, Sidhu hit out at the new DGP of the state and alleged that the DGP had implicated two young Sikhs in the sacrilege case and gave a clean chit to the members of the Badal family. Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota, a senior IPS officer in the Channi government, has been given the additional charge of Director General of Punjab Police.
Angered by the charge being given to Sahota, Sidhu resigned from the post of Congress’s Punjab unit president. Sahota was the head of a special investigation team set up in 2015 by the then Akali government to probe the incidents of sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot. Now a panel of 10 names has been sent to UPSC for appointment of new DGP.
On the other hand, in a clear indication of starting his new political innings, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday said that he will no longer be in the Congress and will resign from the party. At the same time, he also clarified that he will not join BJP. After this announcement, the former Chief Minister also removed the mention of Congress from the profile of his Twitter handle.
