Meeting under the sea to draw attention to the rising water level
In fact, on 17 October 2009, the then President of Maldives Mohammad Nasheed held the world’s first underwater cabinet meeting with his ministers. Its purpose was to show the rising water level of the sea due to the climate change of the world. Explain that due to rising sea level, the islands of Maldives are in danger of sinking. The United Nations was scheduled to meet on climate change in December, but before that, they wanted to attract the attention of the world to this.
All the leaders wore black color diving suits and masks. In this meeting, 11 ministers, the then Vice President and Cabinet Secretary attended. All these people dived 3.8 meters below the sea, where tables were arranged to sit. Due to the clear water, all these people could be seen clearly. This meeting lasted for about 30 minutes. During this time, fish were also seen floating around all the ministers including the President.
Terrorism charges also have to be faced
It is worth noting that as soon as Mohammad Nasheed became the President in 2008, the 30-year-old rule of Mamun Abdul Gayoom came to an end. But then in 2012 Nasheed faced a coup. Due to this, he had to lose the presidency. The Maldives held elections again the next year, but Nasheed had to face defeat at the hands of Gayoom’s half-brother Abdullah Yameen. Then in 2015 he was accused of terrorism and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Nasheed takes over the country’s second most powerful post
While undergoing imprisonment in jail, his health deteriorated and he was allowed to undergo treatment in London. In this way he applied for asylum upon reaching Britain and in 2016 he was granted asylum. At the same time, when Nasheed returned to the country after Solih became the President in 2018. After this he won the parliamentary elections in 2019 and became the speaker. Which is considered as the second most powerful position in the country.
