A 66-year-old man was arrested in Odisha earlier this week after allegedly marrying 14 women in seven states over 38 years. Days after his arrest, three more women came forward and claimed that he married them as well. From college professors, policemen and lawyers to many professional women, he has been implicated in his love trap. He also hanged middle-aged women and married a total of 14 women from seven states one after the other, but this man infamous by the name Don Juan of Odisha was caught by the police on Monday. The real name of this man, who has been busy arranging marriages for 38 years, is Ramesh Chandra Swain.
Ramesh, a resident of a coastal village in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, has been sent to judicial custody. According to the police, Ramesh introduced himself as the Deputy Director General in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. According to the police, Ramesh also duped his wives of lakhs of rupees, three of whom live in Delhi, two in Odisha, two each in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Assam and one each in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand.
Bhubaneshwar Deputy Commissioner of Police US Das said on Monday, “We have traced nine of his 14 wives and appealed to the rest to come forward. We suspect that many of the women who were duped by his side came forward because of social constraints. We are not coming. We appeal to them to approach Odisha Police.”
The local court has sent Ramesh to judicial custody but the police are trying to take him into their custody for further questioning. Ramesh first married in 1982 and last married after 38 years in 2020.
She did her last marriage with a teacher at Arya Samaj Mandir in Delhi. However, Ramesh denied the allegations, saying, “I didn’t marry all these women and I needed a doctor.”

Ramesh, who has different names like Dr. Bibhu Prakash Swain, Dr. Ramani Ranjan Swain, may not be a doctor, but his three children from his first wife are doctors and live abroad. Ramesh’s second wife is a doctor and lives in Prayagraj.
SSP Sanjeev Satpathy said that he cheated the women who wanted friendship. He told that the women whom he has implicated in his trap include a commandant of ITBP, teachers and even a lawyer of Delhi High Court.
Ramesh used to befriend women through matrimonial websites. Ramesh’s luck ran out while living with his wife, a teacher from Delhi, in a rented house in Bhubaneswar. The woman came to know about her first marriage and on July 5, 2021, she lodged an FIR at the women’s police station in Bhubaneswar itself.
He fled from Bhubaneshwar after inquiring about the first wife living in Kendrapara. He lived in Assam with his other wives for six months, during which the complainant woman returned to Delhi. Satpathy said Ramesh used to target middle-aged singles, especially divorced women, who searched for mates on matrimonial websites.
Police have seized 11 ATM cards, four Aadhar cards and other documents including Bihar school certificates. Police said he was arrested twice in Hyderabad in 2010 and Ernakulam in 2006 for cheating unemployed youths. Police say that Ramesh’s educational qualification needs to be investigated, as he is definitely not an MBBS doctor.
