In the week ended April 1, 2022, the Sensex-Nifty managed to close with a gain of about 3 percent. The softening of crude oil prices supported the market. Similarly, FIIs were also seen returning to the market, whose effect was seen in the form of a boom in the market.
Last week, the BSE Sensex closed at 59,276.69 with a gain of 1914.49 points, or 3.33 per cent. On the other hand, the Nifty closed at 17,670.45 with a gain of 517.45 points or 3.01 percent.
The BSE Smallcap index closed with a gain of 3.2 per cent in the week ended April 1. About 100 shares of the smallcap index were seen running 10-25 percent. These include the names of Sansera Engineering, Reliance Capital, Man Industries (India), Vakrangee, Swelect Energy Systems, Centrum Capital, Birla Corporation, and Deep Industries. However, Vardhman Textiles, Future Consumer, Future Retail, Panacea Biotec, Hindustan Oil Exploration Company and Mayur Uniquoters fell 10-20 per cent.
Similarly, the BSE Large Cap Index gained 3 per cent last week. Godrej Consumer Products, GAIL India, Adani Total Gas, Adani Enterprises, Indus Towers, Marico and Mahindra and Mahindra were among the big gainers in the large cap index. On the other hand, Hindalco Industries, Hero MotoCorp, Aurobindo Pharma were among the large cap gainers.
If we look at the midcap space, the BSE Midcap index ran up 2.7 per cent last week. Adani Power, Hindustan Aeronautics, Abbott India, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Bajaj Holdings & Investment, Tata Consumer Products, Oberoi Realty, Union Bank of India saw gains of 7-42 per cent. While Ajanta Pharma, Endurance Technologies, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, Alkem Laboratories were among the midcap losers.
Looking at different sectors, the BSE Telecom Index gained 6 per cent and the BSE Realty Index gained 5.6 per cent while Bankex managed to take a gain of 5 per cent. On the other hand, the BSE Metal index saw a fall of about 2 per cent.
If we look at the BSE Sensex, HDFC Bank saw the biggest increase in the market cap last week. After that Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel were the numbers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies and Tata Steel saw the biggest decline in the market cap.
In the week gone by, FIIs bought Rs 5,590.04 crore in the Indian markets while DIIs bought Rs 5,052.50 crore. Significantly, in the month of March so far, FIIs have sold Rs 43,281.31 crore while DIIs have bought Rs 39,677.03 crore.

On a weekly basis, the rupee saw an increase in the last week against the dollar and on March 31, the rupee gained 42 paise against the dollar to close at 75.78, while on March 25 it closed at 76.20.
