Kolkata: The ruling Trinamool Congress candidates are leading in 99 wards on Tuesday, while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) are leading in two wards each, according to early trends in the counting of votes for Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections on Tuesday. Congress is leading in one ward.
State Election Commission officials said that counting of votes for the elections in 144 wards of KMC began at 8 am. An official of the commission said, “As per the trends, the Trinamool is leading in 99 wards. BJP and CPI(M) are leading in two wards each. Congress is leading in one ward.”
TMC MLA and sitting councilor Atin Ghosh is leading in Ward No 11 of North Kolkata. In ward number 13, TMC’s sitting councilor Anindya Raut is ahead of others. BJP is leading in Ward No. 22 and 23 and Congress is leading in Ward No. 45. CPI(M) is leading in ward number 103 and 98.

In Ward No. 22, BJP’s sitting councilor Meena Devi Purohit is ahead of her nearest rival of Trinamool Congress. In Ward No 45, sitting Congress councilor Santosh Pathak is leading over his nearest TMC rival. The KMC is divided into 144 administrative wards which are divided into 16 towns.
Sporadic incidents of violence, including hurling bombs at two booths, affected the KMC polls on Sunday with over 63 per cent of the nearly 40.5 lakh voters exercising their franchise. (agency)
