Mangaluru (Karnataka)Around 60 final year girl students, studying in Government G Shankar Memorial Women’s First Class Degree College in Udupi district in Karnataka, were sent back home on Thursday because they didn’t wear their hijab. ) was refused to take off.
Muslim girl students argued with the college administration that the Chief Minister has clarified that there is no uniform code in degree colleges, but the officials said that the college development committee has laid down the rules. The girl students insisted that they would not attend classes without covering their heads. He said that both hijab and education are important for him. She also wanted that if the government decided to introduce a uniform code in degree colleges, the college committee should give it in writing. A student told reporters that the chief minister has clarified that the hijab rule does not apply in degree colleges.

“When we asked about it, they say that only the decision of the college committee is applicable here,” he said. She said that hijab is a part of her life and she wears it to classes all the time. He said, “When someone suddenly asks you to take it off, it cannot be taken off. We have asked the college to organize online classes for us.”
The girl students said that they would not come to the college and attend classes till the High Court takes a decision on the issue. Classes are going on smoothly in the college. Police force has been deployed in the college premises to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, Udupi Additional Superintendent of Police Siddalingappa told the media that on the second day of the reopening of the college, the situation was peaceful in all the colleges in the district. He said that Muslim girl students who were willing to remove the hijab have been allowed to attend classes at the Government G Shankar College. MGM College had declared a holiday today and it will open for examinations on Friday. (agency)
