IPL 2022: Even before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL), five-time champions Mumbai Indians have suffered a major setback. Star batsman Suryakumar Yadav may be ruled out of Mumbai Indians’ first IPL match against Delhi Capitals on March 27 as he is unlikely to fully recover from a hairline fracture in his thumb till then.
Suryakumar, one of the four retained by Mumbai Indians, suffered an injury during the T20I series against West Indies and missed the series against Sri Lanka. A source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told news agency PTI on condition of anonymity, “Surya is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA. He is recovering but it is likely that he is not scheduled to play in the first match.
“So there is a possibility that the board’s medical team may advise him not to take the risk of playing in the first match,” he said. Suryakumar is the most important batsman for Mumbai Indians after captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, who was bought for Rs 15 crore 25 lakh. It is unlikely that the Mumbai Indians team will also take any risk by rushing with Suryakumar.
Will be fit in the second match
After the first match, the Mumbai Indians team has to play its second match against Rajasthan Royals on April 2, five days later. It is believed that by then Suryakumar will fully recover. “I think he will be 100% match fit by the second match of Mumbai Indians,” the source said. If he doesn’t play the first match, it will be a precautionary measure. Suryakumar was in excellent form in the T20I series against West Indies and was adjudged the player of the series.
BCCI announces new rules
The BCCI has informed all the franchises about the playing conditions, which includes giving two DRS to each team. All the new rules of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) will be applicable during the tournament. That is, applying saliva to shine the ball will not be allowed, this restriction was implemented due to COVID-19 but later it was implemented permanently. The new rules of MCC will be effective from October.
India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma along with his family has joined the biologically safe environment (bio bubble) of the team. Jasprit Bumrah, the leader of the fast bowling attack, has shifted from one bubble to another. Both were part of the Indian team for the Test series against Sri Lanka that concluded on Monday.
Mumbai Indians have posted a picture of Rohit and Bumrah’s entry into the team hotel in Mumbai on their Twitter handle. Both these players of the national team have gone from one bubble to another, so according to the rules, they will not have to go through a strict three-day quarantine.
