Rahmat Triono, head of Indonesia’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said in a statement that the quake’s epicenter was located within the ocean, but the earthquake’s shock did not have the potential to produce a tsunami. Despite this, he urged people to stay away from such slopes of soil or rocks, where there is a risk of landslides.
Death due to falling of rocks
A motorbike woman died and her husband was seriously injured in rocks falling in East Java’s Lumajang district. Deputy District Chief Inda Amparavati gave this information to ‘Metro TV’. Many houses in the district were also damaged. Television news showed people fleeing in panic from malls and buildings in several cities of East Java Province. Indonesia’s search and rescue agency released videos and photographs of some of the houses and buildings damaged, including the damaged roof of a hospital in the neighboring town of Blytar, Malang. Authorities are collecting complete information about the casualties and damage from the affected areas.
Thousands displaced due to earthquake
Indonesia is often affected by earthquake tremors, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. Last January, at least 105 people were killed in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Mamuzu and Majini districts of West Sulawesi province. About 6,500 other people were injured.
