Amritsar: At least four BSF personnel were killed and another injured on Sunday, after a jawan allegedly opened fire at a Border Security Force (BSF) camp in Punjab’s border town of Amritsar. During this, the personnel who fired the shots also died. Officials gave this information.
In this regard, an official said that the incident took place between 9.30 am to 10.45 am when constable Sateppa S. Of. allegedly opened fire on five of his personnel with his service rifle and during this the accused Sateppa also died. The incident took place in the premises of the 144th Battalion in Khasa area, about 12-13 km from the Attari-Wagah border post near the India-Pakistan International Border, they said.

However, it is not yet clear whether the accused shot himself or was killed in someone else’s firing. In this regard, a senior officer said, “The accused may have died due to some bullet fired back. It’s not clear yet.” Officials said the accused seemed to be angry about his working hours and also opened fire on the vehicle parked in the premises of the second-in-command rank officer.

At the same time, Asif Jalal, who took over as BSF Inspector General (Punjab) last week, while interacting with reporters, denied that there was any enmity (between the accused and other personnel who lost their lives) or any duty related problem. The Inspector General said that the police and their force were probing the matter. A BSF spokesperson said it was an unfortunate incident in which five BSF personnel were killed in firing by a jawan at a force camp in Amritsar.
The condition of the sixth jawan, who was injured in the firing, is critical and is admitted in the hospital. The constable and head constable rank personnel are among those who came under the fire. The spokesman said that a ‘court of inquiry’ has been ordered in the matter. Senior officials of the Border Security Force and Punjab Police have reached the spot, he said. (agency)
