The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday said no proposal to ban ‘hijab’ in educational institutions in the state was under consideration, even as state school education minister Inder Singh Parmar, who criticized the ‘hijab’ ban and proposed a dress code in schools, he also said had “misrepresented” his statement.
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra, who is also the spokesperson of the state government, told the media, “There is no dispute about wearing ‘hijab’ in Madhya Pradesh. There is no proposal under consideration with the state government regarding the hijab ban. Therefore, there should be no confusion in this regard.”
When asked about further protests against wearing hijab in Karnataka, Mishra said that this matter is related to Karnataka, the case is going on in the High Court there.
Further protests against the ‘hijab’ in colleges in several parts of Karnataka came after the state government last week ordered schools and pre-university colleges across the state to fix uniforms for their students or make management of private institutions mandatory. Intensified.
Speaking on the campus unrest in some parts of Karnataka, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Wednesday said schools are for acquiring knowledge and not for spreading religious bigotry.
Vijayvargiya tweeted, “An attempt is being made to spread religious frenzy in Karnataka schools by insisting on wearing hijab. A school has its own dress code and should be strictly followed.”
Meanwhile, Parmar issued a video statement saying that his statements about school dress were linked to “uniformity, discipline and identity of schools”.
A day earlier, Parmar had said that “Since hijab is not a part of the uniform, I think it should be banned.” He had said that the school education department is working to implement a dress code in schools in Madhya Pradesh to ensure that there is a sense of equality and discipline among all students. “It will be implemented from the next (academic) session,” Parmar told the media.
On Wednesday, he said, “Some people misunderstood my statement and misrepresented it. I am denying it. We are not going to implement a new dress code. Nothing is being done in this direction.” The present system in schools regarding dress will continue.”
Parmar had also alleged that “planned efforts” were being made to spoil the environment of the country on the issue of wearing ‘hijab’.
