Bangalore: Following the High Court’s directions, the Karnataka government on Thursday decided to resume classes in high schools and thereafter in colleges and degree colleges for class 10 students from February 14. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai with the Home, Primary and Secondary Education, Higher Education departments and senior officials.
Bommai said, “The three-judge bench has said that they will hear the matter on a daily basis and everyone should maintain peace and not wear religious clothes in schools and colleges till the order comes.” The High Court has also given directions to reopen educational institutions. He told reporters here that the meeting aimed at maintaining peace in the school and college premises and creating a coherent learning environment for the students and maintaining law and order.

Bommai said, “It has been decided that classes for high school up to class 10 will start from Monday and colleges and degree colleges will open in the second phase. The dates will be announced further.” The Karnataka High Court, which is hearing the hijab case, on Thursday asked students not to insist on wearing any kind of clothing on the campus of educational institutions until the matter is resolved. The court, while fixing the matter for hearing on Monday, also said that educational institutions can resume classes for the students.
A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice JM Kazi and Justice Krishna S Dikshit, constituted on Wednesday, also said that it wants the matter to be resolved at the earliest but till that time peace and goodwill should be maintained.
The Chief Minister said that he has convened a meeting with ministers along with Deputy Commissioners of all districts, Superintendents of Police, Deputy Director of Public Instruction and CEOs of District Panchayats through video conference on Friday evening to collect information about the ground situation in the districts and give some instructions. Can give “We have to maintain peace, law and order till the High Court’s verdict is out. All necessary steps are being taken in this regard.”
The Chief Minister appreciated the students for maintaining peace during the last two days. The government had declared a holiday for three days in all high schools and colleges in the state from Wednesday after protests in favor of hijab intensified in different parts of Karnataka.
