Novak Djokovic’s brother Jordi Djokovic has taken out his anger on Tennis Australia, saying that the reason for this entire controversy is the association itself. Djokovic was barred from entering Australia and his visa revoked after the Serb said on social media that he had received a medical exemption to enter the country and participate in the Australian Open.
According to the rules of Down Under, foreigners can get entry into the country only if they are fully vaccinated and have got medical exemption from doctors.
Upon Djokovic’s arrival in Melbourne, officials found that he had not requested a medically exempt visa for not being vaccinated. The Australian Border Force issued a statement saying that Djokovic had failed to meet the entry requirements.
However, Jordi said Djokovic’s papers were fine and the world No. 1 tennis player was being “treated like a criminal”.
“They had the same documents as other tennis players who are already in Australia. Novak and his team had no means of contacting the federal authorities. They were taken to an expatriate hotel without any baggage,” he said. They were taken to the dirty room and told that their belongings would be returned to them upon their return to Europe.
Australian Open: Novak Djokovic made a big mistake in visa application, Australia refused entry
“He was treated like a criminal, while he is a healthy and decent man and a sportsman who has not put anyone’s life in danger and has not committed any federal or legal offenses,” Jordi said.
Australia’s controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios, who has not had a good relationship with Djokovic, took a diplomatic stance on the matter.
He tweeted, “Look I definitely believe in taking action, I’ve been vaccinated for the cause of others’ safety and my mother’s health, but it’s really about the way we’re handling Novak’s case.” It’s bad. He’s one of our great champions in memes and headlines, but after all, he’s also human.”
However, Djokovic’s case is likely to turn into a diplomatic crisis between Australia and Serbia. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison reiterated on Thursday that no country is above border rules, as he ordered the cancellation of Djokovic’s visa.
“Djokovic’s visa has been revoked. Rules are the rules, especially when it comes to borders. No one is above these rules,” Morrison tweeted.
