Old Ironsides rang in its 225th birthday Friday with a cruise via Boston Harbor in a reunion with its previous crew.
The U.S.S. Constitution launched in 1797, making it the oldest commissioned ship within the U.S. Navy, in line with the National Parks Service. It would later earn its nickname whereas preventing off British frigates within the War of 1812 as a result of, the NPS states, “it appeared as if enemy cannonballs could not penetrate the ship’s strong oak hull.”
The Constitution was one of many new nation’s first six warships, commissioned by Congress in 1794.
The Constitution, now based mostly on the Charlestown Navy Yard, started its life not very far-off at Hartt’s shipyard within the North End and took part the 12 months after its launch within the Quasi-War towards France, the NPS historical past states. It would later battle pirates off the Barbary Coast.
